Laurie Daniel scored a record 32pts in Newport?s runaway 56-0 win beating Keith Jarrett?s 30 pts against Penarth in 1968 and so Newport started life in the new Welsh Rugby Union Cup. Daniel scored 5 tries with full-back John Anthony providing the overlap no fewer than four times with his well-timed bursts into the three-quarter line. On the other occasion scrum-half Allen Evans broke blind to put Daniel over. Newport were in a different class to the Swansea valley team due to their extra pace and quicker reactions and outside-half Keith James often tore their defence apart .

Newport?s other try scorers were Paul Evans (2), Gary Sutton (2), Norman Edwards and Phil Waters with Daniel adding 6 conversions.
