"NOTES"
"Members are reminded that today is an "All Pay" game. This afternoon we play the second leg of the First Round Proper. Our visitors beat Abercarn and we accounted for Cwmllynfell in our group, so today we settle which of us goes into the draw for the next round."
"Already the 'Davids' have shaken the 'Goliaths' in the opening games of this Welsh Rugby Union Challenge Knockout Cup, Waunarlwydd lost to Ebbw Vale by the toss of a coin, but Brynmawr beat Abertillery."
"Penygraig has been a rugby stronghold since before the turn of the century and through the years have supplied a steady stream of players to the fashionable first class clubs lower down the valley. When they were in their hey-day they had players picked directly for Wales and two that come to mind are D. Evans 1896/7/8 (England, Scotland and Ireland) and H. Jones, 1902 (Scotland and Ireland). Most of their rugby is played now against neighbouring teams in the Mid-District Championship."
"This is our last game for 1971 and looking ahead to January we have some stiff games to play with, away games against Bridgend, Swansea, Crosskeys and Llanelli and home games against the Royal Air Force and Neath."
"A Happy New Year"
"CAR PARKING FACILITIES"
"With effect from the 12th January, 1972 only members cars can be admitted to the grounds and non members are asked to co-operate by not approaching the main entrance on match days. The Management Committee hope that non members will consider becoming members and thus be able to take advantage of the facility which is available even to members in very few Clubs in the country. Membership is in fact half the normal charge from 1st January, 1972 to 30th April, 1972."
The game itself:-
Newport proved to be too skilful for their second class opponents who put up a tremendous fight. Even after Newport quelled the early fire Penycraig never stopped covering, tacking and constant hounding and often pushed Newport into handling errors. Newport won a lot of possession up front, Vic Perrins took a stream of strikes against the head and Jeff Watkins dominated the middle of the line. With so much possession the result was inevitable and Norman Edwards , Laurie Daniel and Paul Evans each scored 2 tries. Keith James dropped his 14th goal of the season and Laurie Daniel and Gerry Fuller each kicked a conversion. P May kicked a penalty for Penycraig.
