Newport reached the Q/F?s after defeating gallant Brynmawr at Ebbw Vale Welfare Ground. Brynmawr pitched themselves headlong into this tie and were 7 points within 15 mins. Fullback Mike Edwards, brother of former Newport fullback Barrie, kicked a 30yd penalty and wing Cliff Hillman raced over in the corner to score the first ever try against Newport in this competition. Urged on by 3,000 crowd who were braving the wind and the rain, Brymnmawr stuck to their task but then 3 tries by Newport in 8 mins dashed their hopes of a sensational win.

Wing Gareth Talbot making his debut, scored the first, Laurie Daniel, the second and John Jeffrey the third. John Jeffrey was superb and was head and shoulders the best player on the field Brynmawr never gave up but conceded two spectacular tries in the 2nd half. Laurie Daniel outstripped the cover defence and ran 85yds to score while Keith James, shaped to drop a goal and then mesmerised the Brynmawr defence to score a thrilling solo try. Brynmawr battled to the end and had the last say with a second Mike Edwards penalty. Keith James also dropped a goal.
