Tredegar,   11 November 1972
Newport eased into the 2nd round when they overcame Tredegar scoring 13pts in the 2nd half for an 19-8 win.
Rain before the game made the ball greasy and handling hazardous, yet Newport insisted on opening up play
whenever they were in striking distance of the Tredegar line. The policy paid off after 2 min as David Rogers
scythed through the Tredegar defence putting Gerry Fuller over for Robin Williams to convert. Unsure
handling and passing and a spoiling Tredegar defence kept them in the game territorially. A try by Ian
Morgan was a reward for their efforts in the 1st. In the 2nd half Newport upped the tempo and started
throwing the ball around. They were rewarded by 2 tries from wing Mike Shore. Late in the game Tredegar
let the ball travel to the wing and Paul Briggs scored a try. Tredegar supporters were left wondering what
the outcome would have been if they had done this earlier.
