Newport achieved a 26-3 win after a dour struggle and it was not until their plucky, but tiring opponents, faded in the last quarter that the Newport backs found their form. The Burry Port pack fought with tremendous spirit but had no answer to the line out skills of Jeff Watkins and Ian Barnard had a rousing game in the loose. The hard tackling Burry Port backs were never a force in attack and Burry Port scored their only points with a first half penalty goal by Dennis Lewis. Newport?s first half points came from a try by scrum half Allan Evans and 2 penalty goals by fullback Richie Pugh. In the 2nd half Burry Port fought gamely but tired in the last quarter when Newport scored tries through wings Terry O'Gorman, Derek Hadden and Phil Ward with Richie Pugh converting two.
