Newport played in the maroon jerseys of the Crawshays XV to avoid a clash with the black and amber colours of Pontardulais. In this 32-10 victory the Newport pack destroyed their opponents with forceful play in both loose and tight and provided enough ball for the scoring of 8 tries - 4 in each half. The match served to show how much Newport relied on the kicking of fullback Jeff Hazzard. Not one of the 8 tries were converted and Newport took short penalties from spots where Hazzard would have been called upon to kick at goal. Rhys Morgan and Adrian Hearn failed and even Keith Poole was called on to try his luck. Newport led 16-6 at the interval through tries by David Burcher, Keith Poole, Ken Davies and Jeff Martin while Vernon Williams kicked 2 penalties for Pontardulais.

In the second half Jim Dale crashed over and Pontardulais prop Mike Williams scored at the opposite end. Further Newport tries were added by Allan Evans, Jeff Martin and Lyn Jones as Pontardulais cracked under the constant pressure on their line.
