Newport powered their way to a new club record with a 80 v 0 rout of Resolven and needed only an hour to beat previous record of 62 v 0 set against United Services, Portsmouth at home on 11th December 1920. Resolven had little to offer but courage against a rampant Newport side. They opened strongly and kept Newport pegged in their own half for the first 9 mins, but from the moment Mark Morris-Jones opened Newport?s account with the first of his 5 tries they spent the rest of the game fighting a losing battle. The Newport pack dominated the forward battle and sent the lighter Resolven eight reeling in the set scrums with Lyn Jones and David Waters taking nearly all the line-out possession. Newport ran the endless possession at all opportunities and centres David Burcher and Gareth Evans cut the Resolven defence at will in the latter stages and set up countless chances.
On an historical note it appears that the Resolven Rugby Club was founded in 1885. Two representatives of a Newport (Mon) Engineering firm arrived in Resolven to install boilers at Glyncastle Colliery. These young men were playing members of Newport RFC and during their stay combined business with pleasure by training to keep themselves fit for the rugby matches to follow. The strange activity of Charlie Thomas and Alf Morgan soon gained the curiosity of the locals who required no second invitation to join in. A local team soon followed and so was born the game of Rugby Union Football in Resolven village.
