"EDITORIAL • • • "
"Tumble face what is probably their most difficult game in their long and cherished history when they take on mighty Newport on their sacred turf at Parc Y Mynydd Mawr this afternoon."
"Newport come to the Gwendraeth Valley with a very impressive record especially in this seasons Cup competition with 124 points and a solitary try against. But the Welsh Challenge Cup is a great leveller when the minor club plays on their own ground and Tumble's Cup fighting qualities will put the Gwent side to the test this afternoon."

The match, and what a match! :-
Newport squeezed through to the quarter-finals although held 12 v 12 by virtue of the only try of the match scored by centre and captain David Burcher. Two late drop goal attempts and a last second penalty goal chance could have snatched a shock but not undeserved victory for Tumble. That the final outcome rested on try count is testimony enough to Tumble's brave efforts in both attack and defence. Newport did not get the possession expected from the set pieces and were forced to fight tooth and nail for an equal share of ball. All Newport's points came in the first half. 3rd and 30th minute penalty goals by Leighton Davies, David Burcher’s match winning try and Leighton Davies’ conversion in the 18th minute.
For much of the second half, after an early burst, Newport were forced on the defensive as the terrier like Tumble team tore into them in a do-or-die effort. For Newport it was a sharp lesson that in the cup, nothing can be taken for granted.
The efforts of the Tumble team on the pitch were matched by the warm welcome Newport supporters received in the Tumble club house after the game.
