"CLUB NOTES"
"All those members and supporters, who sacrificed watching the All Blacks achieving their 'Grand Slam' over Scotland on television, to visit Rodney Parade, for our game with Aberavon, were certainly rewarded. With what was probably our best display of rugby this season we defeated 'the Wizards' by 30pts to 3pts, scoring six excellent tries. It was a fine all round team performance, but special mention must be made of the back row trio of Roger Powell, Ian Brown and Tim Nicholls, who although lacking in first class experience gave everything in enthusiasm and drive. It was also nice to see the return to form of full back Chris Webber and centre three-quarter David Burcher."
"Everyone at Rodney Parade was delighted to hear the news regarding British Lion Gareth Evans. He has suffered no after effects of his game in the centre for the United against Newport H.S.O.B, and will be back on first team duty over the holidays."
"This afternoon we are once again on the cup trail. During the last two seasons we have achieved outstanding success in the W.R.U, Challenge Cup and with the experience most of our players have gained during this period it is hoped we can once again make our presence felt, although it is certain that Abercarn, will have something to say this afternoon."
"Brynmor Williams, certainly tried hard with other members of the Barbarian team to bring about the downfall of the All Blacks in the last match of their tour last Saturday, It was a great game of rugby football and a fitting climax to a tour that produced many memorable moments. With the All Blacks now back safe and sound in their own country it is certain that they will be remembered as one of the great touring teams. Their captain Graham Mourie set a very high standard with his personal play, while his captaincy ranks with that of Wilson Whineray and Brian Lochore, there can be no greater compliment to an All Black captain."
"A Merry Christmas to everyone, we hope that 'the spirit' will commence this afternoon and continue throughout the Festive Season."
"WELCOME TO RODNEY PARADE"
"This afternoon Newport R.F.C. are delighted to extend a very warm Rodney Parade welcome to their near neighbours from the Western Valley, Abercarn. Although this is not the first meeting between the two clubs, there have been four previous meetings with the Black and Ambers winning them all, it is the most important during the modern era. During recent years Abercarn have been one of the most consistant and outstanding clubs in the Monmouthshire Union."
"During our long illustrious history Abercarn have produced a great deal of talent to wear the Black and Amber jersey. But it is certain that if anyone from the Abercarn or Newport areas were asked who were the greatest talents to arrive down the valley they would answer A. Raymond Ralph and present committee man Roy Burnett. Both these fine outside halves brought distinction to their village and the Newport Club with their magnificent play. Newport are not the only club to benefit from the conveyor belt of talent that has come from the Welfare Ground, Abercarn, all other clubs in the county have been supplied at sometime in their history."
"The Green and Blacks achieved this afternoons game by defeating Llandybie 22-6 in the previous round and it is certain that they will be trying to lower our colours with a brand of attacking rugby that coach Lewis Collins has insisted upon. Full back Martin Hughes an ex-Newport Youth player is an enterprising full back while wings Brian Carter and John Budgett certainly know the way to the try line. Centre Jeff Martin, will be remembered by Rodney Parade regulars for his fine attacking play in a Black and Amber jersey a few seasons ago. His co-centre Mel Davies is the teams leading points scorer this season with over 100 points. At half back, Abercarn have former Welsh Youth International Tony Williams, who played at outside half for Cross Keys for two seasons, and Kevin Way, who took over from K. Kinsey who had a short stay at Cardiff. Up front Martyn Tamlyn, John Dent, Les Ship and Barry Beebles are four forwards who provide 'good ball'."
"Welcome Abercarn may today's game be worthy of both clubs. One thing is certain a Burnett will be in the winning club no matter what the result."
