After the awful memories of Penclawdd, Newport needed to silence the doubters who had predicted another embarrassing away trip. Llantwit Fardre previously unbeaten this season were expected to run Newport close but after bottling up danger man Dennis John, Newport's advantage in pace and skill in both backs and forwards told on the villagers. David Waters supreme in the line out and Mike Watkins an inspiration as a fleet-footed hooker were Newport's key men. Newport took an iron grip at forward early on, kept things tight until they had put themselves out of reach, then opened up. Roger Powell was outstanding in a dominant Newport back-row.
