South Glamorgan Institute,   28 January 1984
Although finally winning comfortably, 34-13, things looked somewhat dicey for Newport at one stage and the students? backs again under-lined just how fragile Newport's defence was. They put up a tremendously spirited fight in the first half before succumbing to the power of the home forwards. Newport's power pack ground their young opponents into the ground with a marvellous display of scrummaging and mauling. Scrum-half Roland Davies gave a fine display. Behind those nine though there was not much to cheer about and Newport were often sluggish and frail in defence, differing completely from the Institute backs who looked menacing whenever they had the ball until they ran out of steam midway through the second half.
