From the match programme:-
"On behalf of Bedwas may I extend a warm welcome to our visitors Newport for this fourth round in the Schweppes Cup Competition."
"Since its inception during the early seventies the Schweppes Cup Competition has often brought together teams in some intriguing contests and today's game surely comes into that category. Newport, whilst not having the best of seasons, are a Club with a great tradition and must be considered favourites for today's game, particularly when one considers their impressive away victory against Llandovery in the last round of the Cup. Our own first team arrive at today's game having achieved five successive victories, the last two against Pontypool United and Cwmbran being extremely impressive. I watched the Cwmbran game last Saturday and I can say that I have rarely seen a Bedwas team play with such commanding authority and this was born out by the emphatic nature of their victory."
"All the portents would seem, therefore, to point to an exciting game which should bring enjoyment to both players and spectators alike. There is no doubt that this is an important game for both our Clubs. However, I trust that when the referee blows his whistle at the end of the game not only will there be a clear winner but also the game of rugby football will also be a winner."
"There will be a draw held in the Clubhouse after the game for a Christmas hamper donated by Peter's Savoury Product Limited."
"Since this is the last game before the festivities commence I wish to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Club Officers and Committee, to extend best wishes to all our members for a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year."
The match itself:-
Newport powered their way to a 20-0 victory at Bedwas but there was nothing spectacular about the win.
They cast off their more enterprising style of recent matches in favour of safety first and a forward orientated approach to grind their way through to the next round. With David Waters dominating the line-outs and the pack dredging up a steady stream of possession from scrums and mauls, they largely ignored their backs in favour of tactical kicking. It may not have been pretty but it was effective, pinning the lively Bedwas side inside their own half.
