From the match programme:-
"CHAIRMAN'S ADDRESS"
"On behalf of Hirwaun Rugby Football Club, I would like to wish a very warm welcome to Newport R.F.C. on this the first meeting of the two Clubs."
"I am sure that Newport, who won the W.R.U. Cup in 1977 and were finalists in 1978 and 1986, will provide us with strong opposition today. But not to be forgotten is the fact that Hirwaun reached this stage of the competition last season and lost only narrowly, six points to nil, to Ebbw Vale in an exciting match in which the only try was scored in the last ten minutes. We hope to do better this season."
"The club expresses sincere thanks and appreciation to today's programme sponsors."
The game itself:-
This game proved to be a mis-match as Newport ran out eight tries to one winners at the Welfare Ground. David Pitt dashed over for a hat-trick, Nigel Callard bagged a brace and Damien Griffiths, Jon Callard and Marc Batten completed the job. After holding Newport to a single Nigel Callard try after half an hour, Hirwaun eventually buckled under the strain and were swept aside as gradually the Newport pack squeezed the last drop of energy out of the home eight. Referee Gareth Simmonds chose to ignore a series of blatant Hirwaun infringements. He had turned up late for the kick-off and did not get any better!
