From the match programme:
"Chairman's Address"
"It gives me great pleasure on behalf of Treherbert Rugby Football Club to extend a very warm welcome to our visitors, Newport Rugby Football Club at Tynewydd (R.M.) Park today for our Fourth Round match in the Schweppes Welsh Knock-out Cup Competition."
"It is many years since Treherbert last played Newport. However, in 1923, Treherbert played Newport in the Final of the "Old" South Wales and Monmouthshire Knock-out Cup, at Rodney Parade, losing 3 points to 4 points. Treherbert scoring the try and Newport a drop goal. (Today's scoring system would have reversed that result). The Treherbert side on that day fielded players such as W. H. Evans (Welsh International); Stan Davies {Welsh International); George Thomas (Travelling Welsh Reserve Outside half); W. (Banky) Jones (Travelling Welsh Reserve); Tommy Evans, Nick Colwille, Tom (Staley) Williams (Final Welsh Trialist) and many others."
"Today's Treherbert side does not contain any Welsh Internationals, but our visitors from Newport, can be assured of a typical Rhondda welcome, both on the field and back in our Clubhouse at the end of the game. Let us hope today's match will be worthy of the name of Welsh Rugby."
"COLIN JONES"
The match itself:
A pre-match deluge, a sodden pitch and a commited Treherbert side held no terrors for Newport who opened their scoring as early as the 8th min and dominated this 4th round cup-tie from first to last. Young centre Anthony Evans stormed across for an impressive hat-trick of tries. Perhaps the biggest contribution of the game came from the evergreen David Waters, who controlled the line-outs to deny Treherbert possession. Wings John Thomas and Andy Tucker scored a try apiece and Newport were also awarded a penalty try after Ttreherbert collapsed a scrum that was sliding back across their line. All Treherbert could manage was a Kevin Edwards penalty goal as Newport dismissed them with ease.
