Pontypridd,   10 February 1990
Revitalised Newport upset the formbook to reach the quarter-final with an emphatic victory against Pontypridd. Newport were tremendously impressive throughout and in complete control of this twice postponed tie. A penalty try proved the deciding score in this highly charged cup-tie. A misdirected Pontypridd clearance was run back at them by Mark Yendle, Glen George and Gary Abraham who gave to Andrew Jewitt who was about to put Andy Tucker over when Tucker was held back before receiving. Referee Jim Bailey had no hesitation in awarding the try, which Abraham converted to add to his two earlier penalty goals. Unimaginative Pontypridd's only points came from the boot of Jonathon Mason.
