Newport went through 2-1 on try count in this shocker of a game that did little to push Newport to the forefront of Welsh rugby. A rudderless Newport without Paul Turner were reliant on Alan Harries and Mike Boyes for kicking duties but Harries was simply not up to the task on the day. Boyes? aimless kicking nearly led to Newport's downfall, although they never looked like losing the game after Alan Harries first minute try. The Wanderers showed far greater enterprise and a Dominic St John try and a Bolderson penalty gave them the lead at half time.

Gavin Pugh broke away from the back of a scrum after the break and Harries conversion put Newport into a 3pt lead which they held until eight minutes from the end when needless shirt pulling from Nigel Callard allowed Bolderson to kick his second penalty.
