Newport moved into the quarter-finals at the expense of their age old rivals Cardiff who had torn into Newport from the start of this cup tie but the Newport defence held firm. When Newport were forced to concede penalties, Mike Rayer was not up to the task of converting pressure into points, missing five kicks in all and all Cardiff had to show for their efforts was a blindside try from hooker and captain Ian Watkins near half time.
Newport completely turned the tide after the break with Kevin Moseley dominating, taking 12 of the 15 line-outs. Glen George was magnificent and his tackling, bullocking runs, and pouncing on loose ball was simply too much for Cardiff. Two Westwood tries and two pressure conversions from Paul Turner gave Newport a well deserved victory.
