From the match programme:-
"CHAIRMAN'S WELCOME"
"Today, as Chairman of Ystradgynlais R.F.C. it gives me great pleasure in welcoming Newport R.F.C. to the Recreation Ground. May your first visit to our club be a memorable one and that when you return Newport, your first view of Ystradgynlais will have been a happy one."
"Croeso cynnes i chi gyd."
"To my own team, best of luck. You are good enough to win. Go out and do the business."
"D. Morgan (Dai Coch)"
"Croeso CASNEWYDD"
"Today, it gives me great pleasure in welcoming Newport Rugby Football Club to the Recreation Ground. It is the Black and Ambers first visit to Ystradgynlais and I'm sure that David Watkins and his team will be out to ensure that Newport will not be the first senior club to lose in a cup match at the Recreation Ground."
"Formed in 1874, Newport's glorious history is envied by clubs throughout the Principality and the length and breadth of the British Isles. When I think of Newport R.F.C, I always think of great players such as Ken Jones (Newport's Most capped player with 44 caps), Stuart Watkins, Brian Price and The diminutive fly half David Watkins (today's team manager). In all, Newport have produced 128 Welsh Internationals, 7 English, 2 Irish, 1 Scottish and 1 South African a record to be proud of."
"Although the present day Newport team may be struggling to find the form of past Newport teams, I'm sure that this will be our hardest match of the Season. Newport, like all Gwent sides, play with one hundred per cent commitment. Today, we also welcome home Newport's scrum - half, Mark Roderick, Mark played for our Youth team and Senior team before transferring to the Black and Ambers."
"Felly, Croeso cynnes i Glwb Rygbi Casnewydd - eu Pwyllgor, Chwaraewyr a'u Cefnogwyr, Mwynhewch y gem, mwynhewch y croeso."
"Good luck lads - its there for the taking. Blues Brother"
The game itself:-
Ystradgynlais predicted it, Mike Lewis dreamt about it, while Newport will have recurring nightmares about the disaster at Yynyscedwyn Road. It was a cup shock to some, but to those who followed Newport's topsy-turvy season it was very much on the cards.
This was no fluke and the blunt truth is had Ystradgynlais won by a 20pt margin then there could have been few complaints from Newport, such was the home sides hunger for the ball and victory. Former Newport outside-half Mike Lewis had an off-day with the boot, missing five gilt-edged chances in the first half but his superb touch-line conversion of Ian Michael's try was the killer blow for a lacklustre Newport team who only dominated the scrums. The scoring of the try summed up Newport's performance with four defenders all missing tackles.
