First division side Merthyr never gave up and were rewarded with a second-half try by the lively Dale Keeping which delighted their large contingent of followers. It was the boot of Daniel Griffiths that proved crucial for Newport and his fine kicking took advantage of Merthyr indiscipline as he kicked 5 penalties.
Merthyr created some enterprising three-quarter moves and threatened the Newport line but, were kept out by a stout home defence. Newport's only try of the game came from Ashley Smith following a smart move involving several Newport backs. The try was converted by Dan Griffiths whose 17pts was the highlight of a dour match. During the match Dan passed 100pts for the season and a career total of 753pts to date to overtake Gary Abraham and then Laurie Daniel to become the 6th highest ever Newport points scorer. Newport, whose hopes of lifting the Premiership title this season had all but gone with Neath, Bridgend and Pontypridd leading the way, now realised that the Welsh Cup was their only chance of silverware this season.
