Newport went on a six try revenge mission against the side who put them out two seasons previously. Newport's Canadians Gareth Rees and Rod Snow ensured there would be no 10-9 repeat with Rees bagging 17 pts while prop Snow weighed in with two tries in his 2nd match for Newport.

The first period was one-way traffic with Newport building a 30-0 lead but they relaxed in the opening 20 mins of the second half before a two try finale. This win came at a price with Newport losing five players to injury and using all their replacements, they had to finish the game with fourteen men, though this was evened up by former Newport lock Russ McDonald whose reckless short arm smash on Kevin Moseley meant he headed to the showers earlier than the rest of his team mates.
