Llandovery,   24 February 1996
A superb one-man show from Gareth Rees at the Queensway Ground ensured a trouble free passage to the last eight. He scored five first half penalty goals and a conversion of Richard Rees? try, plus a drop goal to give him a 20pt haul. Rees initiated a superb try by running the ball from his 22 when the home side expected him to rifle a wind assisted touch kick downfield. This left Diccon Edwards and Duncan Hughes in acres of space and with support from Richard Goodey, Richard Rees was sent over in the corner. With a 25pt lead in the second half and against the wind it was a case of shutting out Llandovery and Newport threw up a wall of steel only broken after 75 minutes by a Jeremy Griffiths try.
