There have been many great games between these arch-rivals, but this sixth-round encounter will be remembered as one of the best with 11 tries amid a sizzling display of attacking rugby played at pace in perfect conditions made for a breathless contest. Victorious Cardiff captain Hemi Tylor said, "it was like ping-pong for most of the game, one minute we were under their posts, the next minute under our own".

It was only in the last 15 minutes that Cardiff managed to put enough distance between themselves and the Black & Ambers. While Cardiff were relieved to come through such a searching examination of their resolve, Newport could only be gladdened by their display. This game made for fantastic viewing, even if Newport's three first half tries and two penalties began with Cardiff failing to secure Shaun Connor's well-placed restarts. While Newport took their chances well, Cardiff always had the upper hand in the tight, and that is what won them the game. The scores were tied at 30-30 with 11 minutes still to go when a Cardiff line-out 2 metres from the home line was taken by Wakeford. The ball was spread out quickly for Mike Hall to crash over and a glorious solo try by Lee Jarvis at the death finished Newport off.
