Without a single league win all season, the trip to Cyncoed in Cardiff was billed as a potential upset but the visitors were always in control, running in 10 tries, with centre David Smith claiming a hat-trick and Shaun Connor contributing 24 pts.

It was Newport's much vaunted scrum power that proved the platform for their victory but they unusually showed a sharp cutting edge behind the scrum. A 3rd minute Jan Machacek try opened the scoring and Ian Jones extended it. Young scrum-half Gareth Cooper gave the students some hope but a further two tries in three minutes from David Smith and Shaun Connor gave Newport a 31-5 lead at half time.

They pulled well clear after the break with Matthew Robinson, Martyn Llewellyn and Nicky Lloyd scoring tries in quick succession. Consolation tries came from Peter Roberts and Jon Williams for UWIC but the visitors continued to dominate with David Smith scoring twice and replacement Matthew Watkins scoring.
