At a packed Cardiff Arms Park on a Friday night Wales international and former rugby league star Iestyn Harris kicked a 2nd minute penalty for Cardiff after a Newport front row infringement but Howarth levelled after Cardiff? were similarly penalised. Howarth put Newport ahead after a penalty for offside. Referee Davies then awarded his 11th penalty in half an hour for Harris to level. The 12th penalty - 8 had been awarded to Cardiff - was awarded to Cardiff although it appeared that Newport prop Snow had been stamped on. Harris? kick rebounded from an upright. The 15th penalty - this time to Newport - allowed Howarth to give Newport a 9-6 interval lead.

Howarth missed two kicks at goal and then Harris kicked downfield for Robinson to win the race to score a try. The conversion was charged down but referee Davies allowed it to be retaken and this time Harris converted. Howarth kicked for touch rather than goal and Forster bulldozed over to give Newport a 1 point lead at 14-13. With 4 minutes left Cardiff and Wales scrum-half Robert Howley picked up and shot thorough a gap for a try converted by Harris. Newport mounted one last effort and former Springbok prop Adrian Garvey was held up in the final minute. Cardiff?s prop Fourie was sent off for a scrummaging offence and scrum after scrum collapsed before Cardiff finally cleared to send Newport out of the Cup.
