On the first ever meeting of the two side in the Welsh Cup, Cross Keys showed more desire on a wet, heavy piitch in a match dominated by the boot. Although Newport in the main dominated Cross Keys? line-outs, their set pieces were a shambles with far too many missed throws. Knock-ons and ill-placed box kicks were the order of the day. The only score of the 1st half was a penalty kicked by Darren Miles for Cross Keys to lead 3-0 HT lead.

In the 2nd half Newport tried to dominate by their forwards but referee Nigel Owens allowed Keys to collapse the rolling maul on at least a dozen occassions. Newport made substitutions and it looked as if they may pull the game out of the fire. But time and again the ball was spilled in the tackl;e and Keys hacked it clear. In the dying minutes Newport bombarded the Keys line and wing Chris Thomas was just bundled into touch before the final whistle went.
