The Western Mail of 29th October 1877 reported:-

"FOOTBALL"

"ROATH V. NEWPORT- On Saturday afternoon these clubs were pitted against each other on the Newport ground. Owing to the recent heavy rains the ground was in a sloppy condition. Nevertheless, there was some good play, but the Roath team were overweighted, and Newport had the game in its own hands. Newport compelled Roath to touch down several times in self-defence, and got five goals and two tries. The Newport team consisted of Messrs. A. C. Phillips, Rickards, W. Mitchell, T. Mitchell, Arthur Goss, Alfred Goss, G. Hoskins, and T. Ponsford, forwards; T. Spittle and C. H. Newman, quarter-backs; C. Phillips and A. Cross, half-backs; H. Graham and J. W. Wood, three-quarterbacks; W. Phillips, captain, back."

* There was no points system in place prior to 1890-91. Instead, a game was determined by the number of goals scored (conversions, dropped goals, and later, penalties). If a try was scored, an opportunity to convert the try into a goal was given. If the goal was kicked successfully, the try no longer counted.

For these games, the number of Tries are shown under 'Tries', and Goals are shown under 'Conversions'. Drop Goals and Penalties are shown in the normal way.
