The Western Mail of 3rd December 1877 reported:-

"FOOTBALL"

"NEWPORT V CARDIFF - A match between teams representing these two towns was played on Saturday, in the Sophia Gardens Field. The Cardiff team was composed of Messrs. E. C. Fry - captain, and Herbert (quarter backs), R. H. Foa and W. D. Phillips (half backs), C. Riches (back), and W. G. Jones, B. Girling, L. Batchellor, E. Williams, J. Hood, F. Thomas, W. Thomas, A. Duncan, H. Davies, Sewell (forwards). The Newport team were: W. Phillips, captain, and Dennis (backs); T. B. Jones (three-quarter back), A. Goss and Cross (half backs), J. Richards, Ponsford, Harding, C. Phillips, Jenkins, Julius, Goss, Lane, and Brown (forwards). Both teams played remarkably well, and the game was drawn, Newport having two touches down to Cardiff's one."

* There was no points system in place prior to 1890-91. Instead, a game was determined by the number of goals scored (conversions, dropped goals, and later, penalties). If a try was scored, an opportunity to convert the try into a goal was given. If the goal was kicked successfully, the try no longer counted.

For these games, the number of Tries are shown under 'Tries', and Goals are shown under 'Conversions'. Drop Goals and Penalties are shown in the normal way.
