This game was reported in the Western Mail of 21st October 1879 as follows along with a report on the Newport Seconds v Maindee game:-
"FOOTBALL"
"WESTON-SUPER-MARE v. NEWPORT.- These clubs met on the Weston grounds on Saturday last. Willmott kicked off for Weston, and play from the commencement was very fast, the Newport forwards playing extremely well together, being always "on" the ball. The first point gained was a good run by Rosser, which ended in a try, and was converted into a fine goal by G. F. Harding. After the change of ends, T. Harding, J. W. Edwards (2), and Rosser each secured tries for the visitors. W. Ponsford also dropped a goal. Weston, although they played well, could not obtain anything, and were beaten by two goals, four tries, and they also touched down eight times in self-defence. The following played for Newport:- T. Ponsford, back; C. F. Thompson and F. Phillips, three-quarter backs; G. Rosser, half-back; J. W. Edwards, quarter back; W. Ponsford, W. Phillips (captain), H. Hancock, G. F. Harding, T. Harding, H. S. Lyne, R. H. Loane, A. Goss, A. F. Goss, with Mr. George Trew as umpire."
"NEWPORT SECOND TEAM v. MAINDEE.- A match was played between the above teams on the Newport grounds, on Saturday last, which resulted in an easy victory for the Maindee team, the latter winning by one goal and four tries to nil, and also compelling the Newport team to touch down five times in self-defence, the Maindee team being compelled to touch down once only. The names of the respective teams are as follow:- Newport – Back: J. M. Wood (captain); three-quarter back: H. Woodliffe; half back; Golledge; quarter backs: O. Phillips and D. Powell; forwards: C. Jordan, B. Griffiths, A. Willey, Jones, Whitley, Fothergill, and H. Williams. Maindee – Back: George Anates; three-quarter backs: Golledge and W. Daniels; half backs: George Baker and John Thomas; quarter backs: J. Spittle and F. E. McDaniels; forwards: Chas. W. Harris (captain), H. D. McDaniel, J. Power, A. Lewis, J. Jones, H. Williams (1st), E. Snelling, and E. Biggs. Umpires: For Newport, A. Phillips: for Maindee, E. C. Badger."
