The Western Mail of 17th November 1879 reported:-

"NEWPORT v. BRIDGEND - These clubs met on Saturday afternoon on the Newport grounds. A large number of spectators was present, the day being remarkably fine. The contestants were engaged an hour and ten minutes, and, unfortunately for Bridgend, the game proved a one-sided affair. The strangers were overmatched, and were compelled to touch down 14 times in self-defence. Newport obtained four goals, three tries, and fourteen touches down to Bridgend nil. The Newport team consisted of Messrs. Thompson, back; F. Phillips, H. Gould, three-quarter backs; C. H. Newman, Lieutenant Knox, T. Spittle, half-backs; W. Ponsford, A. Goss, F. A. Goss, G. Harding, T. Harding, A. C. Phillips, H. Winn, R. H. Loane, and C. Jordan, forwards."

The same edition of the newspaper included reports on two other matches that same afternoon, a game between Public Schools and The Rest of South Wales at Cardiff Arms Park (The Public Schools team included W. Phillips and H. Lyne of Newport) and Newport Second Fifteen being defeated away to Caerleon.

* There was no points system in place prior to 1890-91. Instead, a game was determined by the number of goals scored (conversions, dropped goals, and later, penalties). If a try was scored, an opportunity to convert the try into a goal was given. If the goal was kicked successfully, the try no longer counted.

For these games, the number of Tries are shown under 'Tries', and Goals are shown under 'Conversions'. Drop Goals and Penalties are shown in the normal way.
