"NEWPORT V. MANCHESTER RANGERS"

"On Saturday afternoon about 3,000 people assembled on the Newport ground, to witness the combat between the above-named teams. It was an exciting event. The Manchester team consisted of a powerful body of men, and their play throughout was masterly and skilful. Newport was not behind in pluck and energy but they were sadly overweighted. Unfortunately, G. F. Harding, one of the Newport forwards, had his arm dislocated at the shoulder, and consequently, for the greater part of the game, Newport was deprived of his services. A medical man on the ground restored the dislocated limb to its position immediately. The strangers won the toss, starting the ball from the pavilion end. When time was called, the score stood as follows:- Manchester, two goals (one kicked under protest), and two tries, with three touchdowns to their credit. Newport, three touchdowns. The teams were constituted thus:- Manchester: Messrs. E. T. Trevor-Smith, back; H. W. Parkinson, C. J. Parkinson, and C. F. Hall, three-quarter backs; J. Collier and A. Collier, half backs; H. H. Andrew, W. J. Andrew, F. Barker, J. W. Fletcher, F. N. French, J. Hammond, E. Markendale (captain), H. Stancliffe, and P. Wild, forwards.; Mr. Hibbert, umpire. Newport: Messrs.  R. D. G. Williams, and F. Phillips, backs; G. Rosser, and J. J. Woods, three-quarter backs; C. H. Newman, and W. F. Evans, half backs; C. Jordan, F. Dowdall, T. Harding, G. F. Harding, H. S. Lyne, B. Newman, W. Phillips (captain), Robathan, and T. Spittle, forwards; Mr. R. Mullock, umpire."

* There was no points system in place prior to 1890-91. Instead, a game was determined by the number of goals scored (conversions, dropped goals, and later, penalties). If a try was scored, an opportunity to convert the try into a goal was given. If the goal was kicked successfully, the try no longer counted.

For these games, the number of Tries are shown under 'Tries', and Goals are shown under 'Conversions'. Drop Goals and Penalties are shown in the normal way.
