This game was reported in the Monmouthshire Merlin on 17th November 1882 as follows:-

"FOOTBALL.- Newport v. Swansea. - On Saturday admirers of football mustered at the athletic ground in force to witness a match between the above teams. They were about equal in strength, neither side having any perceptible advantage in the scrimmages, but the home fifteen excelled in passing the ball and general all-round play. Newport won the toss, and the visitors kicked off towards the grand stand. When half-time was called Newport had scored two tries and a goal, to one touch down on the other side. Subsequently they secured two more goals and won, Swansea having failed to do more than touch down once. No hitch occurred during the game, which was a thoroughly interesting one."

* There was no points system in place prior to 1890-91. Instead, a game was determined by the number of goals scored (conversions, dropped goals, and later, penalties). If a try was scored, an opportunity to convert the try into a goal was given. If the goal was kicked successfully, the try no longer counted.

For these games, the number of Tries are shown under 'Tries', and Goals are shown under 'Conversions'. Drop Goals and Penalties are shown in the normal way.
