A brief report of this game was published in the Monmouthshire Merlin of 2nd November 1883:-

"FOOTBALL.- Newport v. London Harlequins. - This match was played on the ground of the former last Friday afternoon, and attracted a considerable number of spectators. Owing to the earth being saturated with moisture, fast play was impossible. The visitors started the ball, and worked in a very spirited manner, but they failed to score. The Newport men played exceedingly well, and won by four tries and several touches down."

* There was no points system in place prior to 1890-91. Instead, a game was determined by the number of goals scored (conversions, dropped goals, and later, penalties). If a try was scored, an opportunity to convert the try into a goal was given. If the goal was kicked successfully, the try no longer counted.

For these games, the number of Tries are shown under 'Tries', and Goals are shown under 'Conversions'. Drop Goals and Penalties are shown in the normal way.
