The Monmouthshire Merlin reported this game briefly on 2nd November 1883:

"- Newport v. Swansea. - On Saturday afternoon these teams met to try conclusions at Newport. When they engage in a match there is usually some tight play, and the game of Saturday was no exception to the rule. The home fifteen were in fine form, and though the opponents displayed both pluck and skill, the Welshmen had to succumb. The scores were:- Newport, two goals, one try, and a few touches down; Swansea, three touches."

* There was no points system in place prior to 1890-91. Instead, a game was determined by the number of goals scored (conversions, dropped goals, and later, penalties). If a try was scored, an opportunity to convert the try into a goal was given. If the goal was kicked successfully, the try no longer counted.

For these games, the number of Tries are shown under 'Tries', and Goals are shown under 'Conversions'. Drop Goals and Penalties are shown in the normal way.
