The Monmouthshire Merlin reported this game on 28th December 1883:-
"FOOTBALL.- Newport v. Llanelly. - In the presence of a large asembly those old rivals the Llanelly and Newport clubs engaged on Saturday in a friendly contest on the ground of the latter. The Llanelly fifteen proved right worthy foemen, and their brilliant play gained for them much applause. During the first half of the game the home team were "nowhere," and until just before half-time, when a try was obtained, their chance of scoring a victory seemed hopeless. But when ends were changed the aspect of affairs altered, and for the better. The visitors found themselves unable to do more than to act on the defensive, and the home fifteen succeeded in kicking a goal. When no side was called Newport had scored one goal, one try, and one touch down, and Llanelly three touch downs. The following comprised the teams:- Llanelly: Backs, S. P. Lewis and E. Powell; three-quarter backs, H. D. Bowen, F. Powell, and J. Bowen; half-backs, Margrave and J. Lewis; forwards, H. Mitchell, W. Mitchell, E. Roberts, Roderick, Smith, T. Jones, M. Williams, and D. Griffiths. Newport: Back, M'Bean; three-quarter backs, A. Gould, Dr. Moynan, and Dowdall; half-backs, Clapp and Harding; forwards, Lyne (captain), T. B. Jones, L. O. Jones, M'Daniel, Young, L. Williams, and L. L. Williams."
