"SWANSEA v. NEWPORT.-An important match was played at the Swansea Football Field on Saturday between the Newport and Swansea teams, which resulted in a victory for the latter. Soon after the ball had been kicked off Bowen for Swansea kicked over the line, and forced Newport to touch down. The ball was then sent into the Swansea 25, and Gould forced the home team to touch-down. Afterwards Dowdall by a good run, obtained a try. A. Gould kicked but the try was not converted. The Swansea men, by some effective dribbling and passing, then forced the visitors to act on the defensive and then compelled a touch down. After some loose play a pass from W. H. Gwyn to G. Bowen sent the leather again over and forced Newport to touch down. Walter Jones did much soon afterwards to save the home citadel. A kick by Gwyn and a run by Jones brought the ball close to the Newport goal line, from whence George Bowen kicked across and E. S. Richards, following up, got a try. Half time followed, Swansea forced another touch down, and D. Gwyn nearly dropped a goal. Newport for the remainder of the time had to work in defence, more splendid runs being made by Gwyn amidst great excitement. This player did get over, but lost the ball. Then Bishop got over, and a maul ensued which resulted in a touch down for Swansea. Newport was afterwards repeatedly forced to touch down. Just before the call of time R. Gould, whose play had been very smart, secured a try, which was not converted. Both teams played exceedingly well, and the result was one of the most exciting games, which have lately been played. The result was: Swansea, one try and ten touches down, or fourteen points; Newport, two tries and three touches down, or eleven points."
This note followed on a reserve team game:-
