The Western Mail of 15th December 1884 reported:-
"NEWPORT v. WESTON.- A moderate Newport team was sent to Weston-super-Mare on Saturday, and in the presence of a large number of spectators the match was played between the respective fifteens. Several of Newport's best men were unable to play, whilst Weston put into the field one of the strongest teams that could be got together. The game was one-sided throughout, Weston winning by two goals and one try to nil."
An unfortunate incident at the game was reported in the Manchester Guardian of the same date:-
"During a football match at Weston-super-Mare, on Saturday, against a team from Newport, Hornett, a well-known pedestrian in the west of England, was thrown, and sustained a fracture of the collar bone."

"NEWPORT SECOND FIFTEEN v. ABERCARN. - Notwithstanding the unfavourable state of the weather which prevailed on Saturday, a fair number assembled on the Newport ground to witness the match between these teams. The match ended in a draw, neither side scoring. The teams were as follows:- Newport Second Fifteen: R. B. Evans, back; O'Leary, Duvis, and Abbot, three-quarter-backs; Hannan and Thomas, half-backs; Brefoot, Watson, Sainsbury, Greenway, Chambers, Yorath, Carr, Parfitt, and Phillips, forwards. Abercarn: Courtney, back; Robert, Rowsell, and Griffiths, three-quarter-backs; Bundy, Williams, and White, half-backs; Burris, Williams, Stephens, A. Mail, C. Mail, Morgan, Davies, and Reed, forwards."
