The Western Mail of 15th December 1884 reported:-

"NEWPORT v. WESTON.- A moderate Newport team was sent to Weston-super-Mare on Saturday, and in the presence of a large number of spectators the match was played between the respective fifteens. Several of Newport's best men were unable to play, whilst Weston put into the field one of the strongest teams that could be got together. The game was one-sided throughout, Weston winning by two goals and one try to nil."

An unfortunate incident at the game was reported in the Manchester Guardian of the same date:-

"During a football match at Weston-super-Mare, on Saturday, against a team from Newport, Hornett, a well-known pedestrian in the west of England, was thrown, and sustained a fracture of the collar bone."

The above edition of the Western Mail also reported briefly on:-

"NEWPORT SECOND FIFTEEN v. ABERCARN. - Notwithstanding the unfavourable state of the weather which prevailed on Saturday, a fair number assembled on the Newport ground to witness the match between these teams. The match ended in a draw, neither side scoring. The teams were as follows:- Newport Second Fifteen: R. B. Evans, back; O'Leary, Duvis, and Abbot, three-quarter-backs; Hannan and Thomas, half-backs; Brefoot, Watson, Sainsbury, Greenway, Chambers, Yorath, Carr, Parfitt, and Phillips, forwards. Abercarn: Courtney, back; Robert, Rowsell, and Griffiths, three-quarter-backs; Bundy, Williams, and White, half-backs; Burris, Williams, Stephens, A. Mail, C. Mail, Morgan, Davies, and Reed, forwards."

* There was no points system in place prior to 1890-91. Instead, a game was determined by the number of goals scored (conversions, dropped goals, and later, penalties). If a try was scored, an opportunity to convert the try into a goal was given. If the goal was kicked successfully, the try no longer counted.

For these games, the number of Tries are shown under 'Tries', and Goals are shown under 'Conversions'. Drop Goals and Penalties are shown in the normal way.
