The Birmingham Post of 17th February 1890 reported on the game as follows:-
"MOSELEY V. NEWPORT. – Rainy weather prevented this interesting fixture at the Reddings from attracting many spectators, but was not inclement enough to make play impracticable. Robertson, of Moseley, was absent, but otherwise the clubs were well represented. The character of the play was of course impaired by the slippery condition of the ball, the work done by the backs being rendered less brilliant than it commonly is ; but the forwards were preternaturally busy in the loose play, and smart defence had to be continually shown on both sides. So sound was this that at half-time a minor point only had been scored on each side, and the equality this demonstrated was maintained to the finish. A fast and spirited game ended, therefore, in a draw, no major point having been scored."
