This match was reported in Jackson’s Oxford Journal of 3rd December 1892 as follows:-
“OXFORD UNIVERSITY v. NEWPORT.- Played on the Merton ground on Wednesday, in delightful weather. The Oxford team was far from strong, Baker and Mortimer being still unable to play, while the forwards were further weakened by the absence of Wakefield and Carey, whose places were filled by Lake and Danks. From the outset it was evident that the Dark Blues were outclassed, the superiority of the visitors being noticeable in every branch. The score at half-time was a goal and a try to nil. On crossing over, the Dark Blues collapsed utterly, Newport putting on no less than five tries, three of which were converted. Three were obtained in rather less than five minutes. As time drew to a close the home team made a grand effort, and some effective passing by Conway, Rees and Gadge nearly resulted in a try, the attempt being stopped right on the line, and the whistle sounding directly after Newport retired victoriously by four goals and three tries to nil.”
