This game was reported in the Western Mail of 31st December 1900 as follows:-
"MOSELEY V. NEWPORT."
"The big crowd at the Reddings, Moseley, showed how interesting this meeting was to supporters of Rugby football. Both teams were decidedly strongly represented. Phillips, the international half-back, was, unfortunately, unable to give his services for Newport. The teams were:-"
"Newport: Back, D. Boots; three-quarter backs, Isaacs, Pritchard, J. Williams, and Alexander; half-backs, Huggett and Lloyd; forwards, G. Boots, Hodges, Williams, Jenkins, Thomas, Brown, Beard, and Partridge. Moseley: Back, Birtles; three-quarter backs, Yates, Baker, Evans, and Streeton; half-backs, Briggs and Chamberlain; forwards, Ebsworth, G. Evera, C. Eyers, Cattell, Godfrey, Sanders, Daykin, and Maraton. Referee, Mr. Crosbie, Wolverhampton."
"Moseley started, and a mistake by J. Williams gave the home men the upper hand, but they could not take advantage of it, for the Newport combination was decidedly stronger than that of Moseley, whose passing was ragged. Persistent work by the visitors took them, fifteen minutes from the start, into the 25 line. The upshot was that J. Williams, after a grand run, scored a try. Lloyd nearly goaled, the ball hitting the post. For a few minutes Moseley took heart and gained an advantage, but the Newport forwards broke away again, and Alexander scored another try for the visitors before the home team had recovered from the surprise of the first signal defeat. Lloyd again took the kick, which this time was decidedly wide of the mark. The play after this was of a see-saw fashion."
"Half-time score. G. T. M.
Newport ........................... 0 2 0
Moseley ........................... 0 0 0 "
"Newport opened well in the second half, and continued the splendid game they played in the first portion of the tussle. The ball was very smartly manipulated by the three-quarters. J. Williams was the last to get hold, and he had just time to run over and touch down before Yates grassed him. It was a clever attempt, and ought to have met with better luck. Moseley then made another effort, but the game was soon again near the Moseley citadel. Boots dropped what many of the spectators thought was a goal. It was, however, a foot or so wide of the mark. Another effort by the Moseley forwards took the game into the Newport stronghold, and during a short and sharp scrimmage Boots, the Newport back, was injured in the leg, and had to retire. Very shortly afterwards there was a fine run by the Newport forwards, and, Huggett, passing to Thomas, the latter beat the Moseley advance men and scored an easy try. This Lloyd converted. After a little more effort the visitors dashed away, and G. Boots landed the ball over the line. Lloyd, however, failed to convert. Moseley again tried to score a point at least, but play went into the Moseley quarters. The home men seemed to play an individual game with the result that interest centred with the Newport combination. The finish was exciting, and Newport nearly added to their big score on the nick of time."
"Final score. G. T. M.
Newport ........................... 1 4 0
Moseley ........................... 0 0 0 "
