The Times of 13th December 1920 reported:-
"NEWPORT V. UNITED SERVICES"
"Newport beat the United Services at Newport on Saturday by eight goals, one dropped goal, and six tries (62 points) to nothing."
"It was unfortunate that the fixture clashed with the match between Devon and the Royal Navy, for the Navy had first claim on the Services' Fifteen, with the result that only two of their regular side, Lieutenant Williams-Powlett and Lieutenant O'Conor, two forwards, were included in their first visit to Newport. As a consequence the game was no test at all of the strength of the Portsmouth team. Throughout the game Newport were overwhelmingly superior, and, after they had scored their first two tries within five minutes of the start, it was recognized it was simply a question of how many times the Welshmen would cross their opponents' goal line. Newport, however, certainly gave a remarkable all-round display of Rugby football. There was one pleasing feature, too, about the Services' play that Welsh clubs appear to be losing - the art of heeling the ball back in the loose instead of attempting to force a way through the opponents in front. The Services did this to perfection, and had they possessed the necessary speed and cleverness behind the scrummage, they would have put up a much better fight. Fred Birt, the former Welsh international, played splendidly at back for Newport, and kicked eight goals. Hammett and Shea were the pivots of the three-quarter line, and Holland showed rare dash. There was, of course, the usual understanding between J. Wetter and W. Martin. Of the forwards, Neil McPherson and Attewell were prominent. Allen, in the centre, was the most dangerous of the Services' backs; he made some great bursts, but received no support. O'Conor, Williams-Powlett, and Menzies were the best of the forwards. The sides were:-"
"NEWPORT.- F. W. Birt, back; J. Rees, J. Shea, E. Hammett, and A. F. G. Holland, three-quarter backs; J. Wetter and W. J. Martin, half-backs; N. McPherson, J. Whitfield, A. Bell, W. Radford, L. Attewell, W. C. Evans, P. Jones, and G. Collins, forwards."
"UNITED SERVICES.- Lieutenant P. F. Dawson, back; Midshipman W. G. McKenzie, Midshipman R. C. Allen, Lieutenant B. Watson, and Lieutenant C. H. L. Guthrie, three-quarter backs; Midshipman J. H. Pugh and Lieutenant J. S. P. Wood, half-backs; Lieutenant R. C. O'Conor, Captain P. W. Williams-Powlett, Lieutenant G. D. Graham, Lieutenant R. H. Pearce, Lieutenant G. Menzies, Lieutenant W. S. Mann, Lieutenant C. E. Stonham, and Lieutenant R. F. B. Swinley, forwards."
