From the match programme:-
"TO-DAY'S VISITORS."
"OUR GREAT ANNUAL WELCOME TO WATSONIANS"
"Once again the Star Match of our fixture list has arrived, and our Scottish Friends, the Watty's have come again to try their luck against Newport As most people are aware, it was a near thing to the match coming off, thanks to those good old glorious gold watches of 1922 and 1923, or were the gallant 2600 subscribers to blame. In any case the gold won the day, and we are more than delighted to see the chocolate and white jersey here with us again in 1923."
"Since pre-war, 4 encounters between the teams have taken place, Newport having been victorious in each encounter, with a total of four goals, 14 tries (62 points) to 2 goals, 1 try, (13 points)."
"Whichever way the issue goes to-day, we are confident we shall witness a grand game between the two sides this afternoon, and if at the end of the game the Watsonians still fail to have secured a win since the war they will, no doubt, receive just as warm a cheer from our Supporters as if they had won."
"Of to-day's two fifteens, 14 played against each other in the match last Boxing Day - 6 Watsonians and 8 of Newport."
