"NEWPORT BEATEN AT NORTHAMPTON"
"Northampton, who had beaten Cross Keys on Saturday, accomplished another excellent performance at Northampton yesterday, when they beat Newport by one penalty goal and one try (6 points) to one try (3 points). This was the Midland club's first victory over Newport."
"The match, as might be imagined, was sternly contested - at times, much too sternly - and the extreme keenness of the marking and tackling prevented the play ever from becoming spectacular. Newport, who included nine international players, scored first, Griffiths crossing the home goal-line for a try that was not converted. Jones then scored an equalising try for Northampton, but for the remainder of the first half the defences of either side held out against a series of strong attacks. In the second half the same kind of game went on, and both goal-lines had repeated narrow escapes. It was not until just before the finish that Vaughan landed a penalty goal, and so gave Northampton the game."
