From the match programme:-
"SOME OF THE MEN WHO SHOCKED THE SPRINGBOKS."
"Abertillery, Welsh Champions of two seasons ago, and runners-up to Llanelly last season, have had a bad time this campaign, both in their matches and in their domestic affairs. Injuries to key players, such as O'Neill, their full-back, their two centres, and their smart little outside half, Horace Richardson, completely up-set the side, and several unexpected defeats were the result. Now some of their injured men are recovered, and, with peace declared in the dispute with the Council over their playing field, they are hoping to make up lost ground. They are, indeed, a very strong side, especially forward, in spite of the recent loss to the Rugby League of Trevor Thomas. They provided half the joint team that gave the Springboks such a fright in the Western Valley."
"Abertillery have done very well against Newport in recent seasons, and of the last eleven games they have lost only four games, won five, and drawn two. They have not fared very well at Newport, however, though in 1928 they won on the Athletic Ground by 1 goal, 1 try, to 2 tries. Newport have not won at Abertillery since 1924."
"Of 30 games played between the Clubs since the first in 1908, Newport have won 21, lost six and drawn three."
