"AS WELCOME AS EVER."
"WATSONIANS WHO BEAT US EARLY THIS YEAR-"
"To us in Newport, Christmas without the Watsonians would be like beef without mustard, for there are no more welcome visitors to the Athletic Ground than these famous Scots. Indeed, one of the biggest gates Newport have ever had for a purely Club game was that in 1928, when over 10,000 paid £420 to see Newport beat the Watsonians by 3 goals, 15 pts. to 2 goals (1 p.g.), 8 pts."
"On the 1st of January this year, it will be recalled, Newport fell in with the wishes of the dozens of old friends they had made through previous Watsonian tours in Wales, and themselves went on tour in the North. The New Year's Day match in Edinburgh - the first time Newport had been there since 1903 - was won by the Watsonians by 2 goals, 1 try, 13 pts. to 2 goals (1 p.g.), 8 pts., so we hope to return the compliment to-day."
"That game was the thirty-third played between the two Clubs since the first meeting on New Year's Day, 1894, when Newport won at home by 1 goal, 5 pts. to 1 try, 3 pts. Newport have won 28 of the games and lost three. The Watsonians won at Newport in 1904 by 1 goal, 2 tries, 11 pts. to 1 try, 3 pts., and in 1905 by 1 try to nil. The drawn games were both, at Newport in 1897 and 1903."
"On Boxing-Day last year Newport won a particularly thrilling game by 4 goals (1 d.g.), 1 try, 22 pts. to 3 goals) (1 p.g.), 1 try, 16 pts., and in the previous year were successful by 1 goal, 2 tries, 11 pts. to 1 try, while in 1927 a very close game yielded only one try, which' won Newport the game."
