"GLOUCESTER v NEWPORT."
"SATURDAY, MARCH 18th, 1939."
"The return game with Gloucester on the above date at Kingsholm, Gloucester, will mark the Centenary game. For the occasion, the Committee are organising a trip for the game. Full particulars of the Outing and cost will appear in future Programmes."
"THE FAMOUS SCARLETS."
"No Club - not even Cardiff - can boast of such a brilliantly consistent record in the last decade as Llanelly, who, until this season, have for years been champions or near the top of the Welsh unofficial Championship Table with remarkable regularity. Injuries to key men and loss of others to the Rugby League have set them back this season, but, as usual, they are showing real signs of recovery. They have not been defeated since November, and in this period they have accounted for Neath, Cross Keys, London Welsh and Gloucester, and drawn with Cardiff and Bristol."
"Llanelly still have many notable players in their side. Above all, of course, there is Ifor Jones, the most remarkable figure in present day Rugby. It is 15 years since he first played for Wales, yet this wonderful veteran is still indispensable to one of the finest packs in Wales. It is doubtful if he has a peer as a tactician in these days. Gwyn Thomas, a smart full back, has played in a Welsh trial this year. The two wings, W. H. Clement and Ovet Jones, toured South Africa with the British team. Clement has only just returned to the game, but if he recaptures last season's form he is certain to regain his place in the Welsh ream. Ovet Jones was a Welsh reserve at Twickenham."
"D. L. Thomas, the outside half, is one of the smallest players in first-class football, but he is very elusive. His partner, J. T. H. Evans, has played in several Welsh trials."
"Supporting Ifor Jones in the pack are F. L. Morgan, who was in the Welsh team at Twickenham, D. T. Morgan, Stanley Williams and J. L. G. Morgan, all Welsh trial players of this season, and Bryn Evans, who was reserve hooker to Travers for the last Welsh team."
"Llanelly have happy memories of their two games with Newport last season. In April, 1937, they won at Llanelly by 2g. (1 p.g.) 5t., 23pts., to 1 p.g., 3pts.,the biggest victory they had ever scored at Newport's expense, and in January 1938, they registered a record win at Newport by 2g. 3t., 19pts., to 1 p.g. 1t., 6pts."
"It is also worth recording that in 1934-35 Newport recorded the first "double" at Llanelly's expense for 34 years, winning at home and away."
"Newport and Llanelly have met 76 times. Newport's victories number 38 and Llanelly's 26, while 12 games have been left drawn."
