A match in which Newport thwarted Cardiff's ambition to defeat Newport four times in a season!
From the match programme:-
"NOTES AND TOPICS"
"Cardiff's win over Richmond by 18pts. to 6 was an excellent performance considering the elements, and no one contributed more to the enjoyment of the game than W. R. Davies, the outside half, who was in great form. Another pleasing feature was the splendid play of Hale and Edwards, and it would seem as if the Cardiff back division has once more settled down to normal. The one disquieting feature over the week-end was the departure of Eddie Watkins for Wigan, making Cardiff's fifth recent loss to the Rugby League. Watkins rendered the club yeoman service and he certainly will be missed both by his club and his country."
"To-day's clash with Newport is probably the most important of the season as it gives the Blue and Blacks an opportunity of securing their fourth win in one season over their famous rivals. This has only happened twice in the meeting of the two sides, i.e., in seasons 1897-8 and 1905-6, when Cardiff did the trick on each occasion, and there will doubtless be tremendous excitement over the issue this afternoon. "The gentleman's agreement regarding scrummaging will again operate and considerably more open back play should result. It is obvious that Newport are going to have a big say in the trend of affairs as they have chosen the very strongest available team and it is observed that in a strong back division, Little retains his place at outside half. Allen and Adams will prove Newport's strongest attacking link. In a pack which will be formidable whichever eight plays, the only doubt applies to V. J. Law, the Newport captain, who may stand down in view of his selection to represent Wales against Ireland next Saturday. If Travers gets an undue share of the ball, the Newport backs may well give Cardiff a very anxious time, although they will have to introduce more than ordinary ingenuity to circumvent the cleverness of the Cardiff backs. Indeed, Newport must consider Wooller their Football Enemy No. 1, as the Cardiff captain has developed a penchant for bringing off the unexpected against the Usksiders. Only a fortnight ago he dropped the goal and converted a penalty by which Cardiff won by 7 pts. at Newport. In the previous game at Cardiff he also scored a sensational try and in every game for seasons past by his all round play and scoring proclivities he has been the main obstacle to thwart Newport in their efforts to gain the victory over their rivals."
"The Cardiff team to-day is identical with that which opposed Richmond, excepting that Spence, recovered from a cold, replaces Bevan. Selby Davies, a real utility man, will act as "lock" forward in place of Watkins and that other useful forward, K. Jones, retains his place as the other flank forward. It is observed that Porter now plays on the left wing with his captain and patrons will be particularly anxious to see Hale and Edwards more than fulfil the promise they gave last Saturday of being an effective right wing combination. Given fine weather, we should have an exhibition of football which should stir up a bit of the old-time enthusiasm, and while prophecy in these games is always unsafe, Cardiff supporters have a kind of feeling that their side will add another page to football history by winning this vital fourth game."
"Patrons will be delighted to learn that a Cardiff side has been given permission to participate in the Sevcn-a-side Middlesex Tournament to be held for charity at the end of season and to know also that they have been excused the preliminary rounds. The Cardiff club has nominated the Cardiff Royal Infirmary as their charitable institution to receive a share of the proceeds."
"Patrons are further reminded of the attractive additional fixture on Tuesday, March 14th, when Oxford University will be met on the Park. Members and season ticket holders will be admitted free to their usual seats and other prices will be as usual. The kick off has been timed as late as 5.15 p.m. to meet the general convenience of the public, and especially the working community, and there should be a big crowd to welcome the Oxonians."
"Congratulations to Wooller, "Wendy" Davies, Travers and Law upon their inclusion in the Welsh side to meet Ireland at Belfast next Saturday, Law being a first 'cap', similarly to Chris. Mathews of Bridgend. Wooller also retains the captaincy and he will need to infuse his colleagues with all the fire and dash that is going to prevent Ireland from winning the championship, an achievement they last accomplished in season 1934-35."
" "Physical Fitness" enthusiasts will have an opportunity of seeing a real demonstration of what that means on Wednesday, March 22nd. on the Park, when Wales and Scotland meet in a Ladies' Lacrosse International. These lacrosse exhibitions, for sheer speed and endurance, put many of our rugby exponents in the shade."
