"The Club presents"
"Youth Takes a Bow"
"By HUBERT JOHNSON"
"In 1939 a sub-committee was formed to start a Youth Rugby Team for the Cardiff Club. Unfortunately "Hitler's Youth" started first, and we had to delay our game until we had beaten them at theirs. So during last season it was decided to get cracking and fill a much needed requirement, and it was a great pleasure that I was included on the sub-committee to start this venture with the full backing and co-operation of the Cardiff Rugby Club."
"My colleagues, Duncan Brown and Arthur Thomas, need no introduction except to say that they couldn't be bettered for efficiency, and even more important - keenness. We decided to co-opt as a direct link with the Cardiff Schools Viv Phelps, an indefatigable worker for School Rugby and Welsh Schoolboy International Selector, and Les Jones, a past Chairman of the Cardiff Schools Union. Their help has proved invaluable."
"The Boys."
"At the moment we have 50 boys to coach and train, and after holding three trial matches we are sure that we have some grand material to work on and soon will be up to Cardiff standard."
"Players who have joined Cardiff Juniors:
"Welsh "Caps." "
"John Brown and Jim Walsh, 1947; Bryn Mapstone and Derek Grindell, 1949."
"Cardiff "Caps." "
"M. Harries, M. Harding, Howe, L. Williams, B. Mapstone, J. Brown, J. Walsh, D. Grindell, W. Speake, W. Boston, T. Donovan, B. Horrigan, K. Jones, J . Erskine, B. Walsh and A. Trask."
"In addition, K. Nicholson and A. Field have played for Cardiff Boys."
"Our fixtures include most of the local High Schools and Youth Clubs and we have already been approached to carry the Cardiff standard of play to many distant youth clubs. One interesting match has been arranged with Bridgwater Youth, who desire to see a Cardiff team at all costs. Fixture cards are in process of being printed and will be distributed to members and supporters very shortly."
"The Boys will play about 12 games on the Arms Park before the main games and so blood our future Seniors to that great rugby atmosphere of which you supporters and members play such a big part."
"These boys wi11 be coached, guided and kept in junior football until they are ready to take their places in the ranks of the Seniors, and if your pleasure in watching them equals the joy of working for such a grand bunch of young men, we are all in for many happy seasons."
"Our Plan and Policy."
"1. Open football first, results second."
"2. A programme of rugby talks, Brains Trusts, and films for the winter evenings."
"3. Coaching on training nights, with the assistance of Bleddyn Williams, Frank Trott, Haydn Tanner, Wilf Wooller, etc., and many others."
"4. All boys who join our Youth Organisation and are not getting a regular game will be coached and enjoy all training amenities and will be encouraged to play for other youth teams in the area."
"5. A search for another ground to enable, us to run at least two youth teams."
"Any boy desirous joining this organisation should contact Mr. Duncan Brown, c/o Cardiff Arms Park."
"So now, you ladies and gentlemen - most of you gentlemen being past, present or future players - are part of this great club of ours, please give this project and the boys every support and encouragement. We will do the rest. After all, they belong to you, and this is an important stage of their lives."
