From the match programme:-

"AN   UNBEATEN   NEWPORT."

"By THE EDITOR"

"IT is many years since Newport arrived at the Arms Park with a clean sheet, and we give them a special welcome today  in  recognition of their splendid performance. We had  hoped that our own XV would have stayed undefeated, but they fell on Monday to a determined Coventry XV."

"Thus the boot is on the other foot today, for whereas in the past Cardiff have been struggling to hold out against the attacks of Newport, we shall see Newport in action today, endeavouring to defeat the challenge of Cardiff."

"Thus it should be a keen match, with no effort spared on either side. Both teams have splendid packs of forwards, but the question that will be settled this afternoon is whether the Newport backs have the edge of their Cardiff opposites. This will decide the issue of the game."

"Newport have a sound full-back in R. Hughes, who without being spectacular gets through a tremendous amount of work. Two wings who will run hard in Ross and Lane. At centre Bryn Williams is playing well, and R. D. Owen comes into the side for the first time this season in view of his greater experience."

"At half-back Burnett and Williams are one of the best pair of club half-backs in Wales at the moment, and they should have a great duel with our own pair, Morgan and Greenslade. However, how far the outside halves will escape the attention of the marauding wing forwards is a matter of conjecture."

"Both packs of forwards have done sterling work this season. Tamplin and his merry men have won many a match, and it is interesting to note that Tamplin, Collins, Goodfellow and Douglas were absent from Monday's game when Coventry won. They will be back today, though Tamplin has had a hard week's rugby with the British Police."

"Newport have a pack as good as any in Wales, with L. E. T. Jones going well as leader. Watch D. A. G. Ackerman, one of the most promising of young forwards. Yes, today's match will be a ding-dong struggle!"

"Last Saturday Cardiff Athletic suffered defeat for the first time this season. Now, like the first XV, they are free from the responsibility of defending a record."

"Cardiff Youth XV were also disappointed last Saturday, when their match with Bridgwater in Somerset had to be cancelled. Last year's match was such a success that everyone concerned looked forward to another brilliant exhibition of rugby."

"On Sunday (tomorrow) the British Team arrive in London. At the time of going to press it was not known how many were returning to Cardiff immediately. Several of the players are reported to be spending a few days in London with their wives. However, we can save our welcome for the day they return to the Cardiff side. Then we can give them a special cheer for upholding the traditions of the club!"

A brief report in The Times of Monday, 9th October 1950:-

"CARDIFF LOSE AGAIN"

"Cardiff lost for the second time within a week when going down before the unbeaten Newport; by 8 - 3 at Cardiff Arms Park, where a 30,000 crowd watched the struggle between two great rivals. The Newport forwards got the ball almost continuously from the set scrums and R. Burnett, with plenty of opportunities, formed the mainspring of the Newport attack. Cardiff lacked speed and thrust in the centre."
