From the match programme:-
"Ken Jones and R. T. Evans, captain and vice-captain elect of the Newport team, take over the Newport side in the home game against Leicester this afternoon. With them will be Newport's fellow-tourist, Malcolm Thomas who does not report for duty in the Navy until Monday, and the first appearance of these three players will be a point of the greatest interest in to-day's game."
"Preceding the kick-off this afternoon there will be a short ceremony on the Field to honour the homecoming of the three Newport Tourists, when they will be officially welcomed by the Mayor of Newport (Councillor A. E. Wills, J.P.), the Chairman of The Newport Athletic Club (Mr. R. S. Snelling, J.P.) and the Chairman of the Newport Football Committee (Mr. T. J. Wetter). Ken Jones, R. T. Evans and Malcolm Thomas all performed grandly in this successful British Tour. They added honour and dignity to the Rugby game, to Wales and to Newport, and all our supporters will wish to join in a rousing cheer of welcome to all three players."
"Leicester, in themselves, are a most popular attraction on the Newport Ground, and we can anticipate a feast of fast, open football and a grand match this afternoon. Leicester are a most able side this season. In their seven games played they have scored over 100 points, heavily defeated Richmond last Saturday and only failed by the barest margin to register victory over Cardiff. At Leicester, in the corresponding match last season, Newport were defeated by 13 pts. to 8, but won the return game at Rodney Parade by 13 pts. to 3."
"And, finally, this is the appropriate opportunity to pay tribute, to Roy Burnett who has been the acting Newport captain in the seven games played and won this season. In the opening programme of the season we wrote of him: "This young player (Burnett) should surely be destined for the highest honours in the game which will, in due season, include captaincy of the Newport side, and the experience he will gain during the month or so ahead will be of great value to him." We venture to add only that those remarks have not proved unfitting."
"SUPPORTERS CLUB NEWS"
"To-day is a momentous day in the annals of the Club, because we welcome back our 3 Tourists who have, we feel sure, upheld the fine traditions of the Newport Athletic Club, during their sojourn "Down Under"."
"We also join in wishing Ken Jones and Bob Evans the same "Best of Luck" that has attended the team so far. Roy Burnett has certainly set a very high standard of the type of Rugby the Supporters enjoy, and he has been ably backed up by a Team who have played as a Team, and are full value for their unbeaten record. Ken should feel very proud to take over the reins of such a fine band of fellows."
"We were naturally very pleased to cheer our second successive victory over our near neighbours at Cardiff, and we thank the Cardiff Supporters Club for entertaining not only our Supporters, but the Newport and Cardiff teams as well. We hope to return the compliment on the occasion of the Cardiff visit in November."
"Arrangements are going ahead for the Annual Outing to Richmond on January 27th and we have already filled 2 coaches. Have you booked yet? If not, contact the Committee at the Bowling Section after to-day's game, and get details."
"A train trip is also being run to Murrayfield at an approximate cost of 53/-. If you want to go, book now and pay a deposit. Weekly donations can be accepted for either of these trips. Do it now, and give the organisers fair chance to make arrangements."
"We expect to announce a sell-out of the first 1000 badges in the next issue, so if you haven't got your badge yet, get it now."
"We are eagerly awaiting our next tussle with the Wasps and wish them success in to-day's game, so that they too, can visit us with an unbeaten record."
"We are very pleased to announce that Col. Partridge has kindly consented to be our first President, and amongst our distinguished Vice-Presidents are Sir David Rocyn Jones, Dr. W. R. Campbell, Mr. Tommy Vile, Mr. G. T. Stephens, Mr. R. Snelling, Mr. V. Griffiths, Mr. W. Everson, Mr. Collins ('Dromio'), Mr. Kimpton and Mr. Angus Davies."
