From the match programme:-
"The Penarth and Newport Clubs have sensibly arranged to transfer the game, due to have been played to-day on the frost-bound Penarth Ground, to the straw-protected Athletic Grounds, which are in first-rate condition. It is wise for the game to be played where possible - although, naturally, Penarth supporters will be disappointed at missing such an important home game - because fixtures, during a bad winter, can become all too congested when the attempt to clear-up arrears at the end of the sason is made."
"Our supporters will, we feel sure, excuse the abridged programme for to-day's game, which has been published at very short notice."
"The Penarth side is of interest. It includes the ex-Cambridge full-back, Clive Davies, whom Newport supporters will remember for an outstanding performance with the Cambridge team at Rodney Parade two seasons ago. Also included at centre-threequarter is the former Newport player, Maurice Walsh who has been out of the game for a long while following an operation to his knee. Walsh gave the Newport Club sound service, and his re-appearance in the game will be welcomed. Captain of to-day's Penarth side, Ray Roberts needs no introduction on any Welsh Ground, as he is still a fine hooker and most useful allround forward."
"Some changes have been necessary in to-day's Newport side. Rov Burnett and Lyn Davies are guest players with the Swansea team in France, and their places are taken by R. D. Owen - recovered from injury - and Jack Travers. With both Peter and H. A. Davies unfit S. Kimpton plays his first game of the season in the forwards. There is also some doubt as to the fitness both of John Lane and W. A. Williams, both of whom are included in the published team pending a decision on their playing this morning."
"There is a post-war precedent for the transfer of a fixture to Newport. In the severe '46/'47 season Gloucester, for the same reasons played their home game on March 22nd at Newport. A few weeks earlier arrangements had also been completed to switch Blackheath's home fixture, but on the day in question conditions proved to be too bad even for Rodnev Parade!"
